Christine Winquist (Featured Artist) How many times have you asked an artist, "What do you paint?" Every artist is confronted with this question. To solve this, I create my own subjects by building original abstract sculptures made out of cardboard and then paint them in oil on canvas. The sculptures are discarded after use. The paintings resemble Cubism because the sculptures have many "facets". However, it goes beyond Cubism/Modernism by the fact that I painted the sculptures in a manner that is 3 dimensional (where Modernism focused only on the flatness of the canvas) and furthermore, they are a response to the contemporary human condition, that of forming an identity in a society that feels somewhat like a facade. Take the mannequin challenge as an example. Meaning is derived by an individual viewer's perception. It is post-modern because it requires the viewer to participate in the experience of art by bringing their own views and perceptions to the artwork. In essence, the sculptures are empty and require the viewer to finish the question or statement, therefore the viewer plays a large role. As people often say, "I know what I like when I see it," and that is what I am hoping to achieve. I reside in the Uptown neighborhood in Chicago. I have exhibited in several prestigious group shows and won purchase awards at two universities. Also, I have exhibited in an internationally-recognized art gallery and other local galleries, have an Associates degree in Fine Art, a Bachelors degree in Sociology and a Masters in Accounting. I interned at a local gallery and have sold many commissioned pieces in a wide variety of styles. My philosophy is simple: beauty adds to the quality of your life and should be accessible to all.
